The Story of the Rising Sign
Jyotish or Vedic Astrology has a few differences compared to Western Astrology, such as yogas and nakshatras and oh soooo much more. One of the most important difference between the two forms of Astrolgy is the Lagna or the rising sign. In Vedic astrology, the rising sign plays a very important part of a person’s life. The Lagna describes the basic map of how a person’s life will look. It represents the constellation (in sanskrit – rashi) that’s overhead on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth. Sounds simple, right?
Western astrology places much importance on the Sun sign, where Vedic astrology places great importance on the Lagna. Vedic astrology also uses the Sun and Moon signs, but the biggest importance is on the Lagna. It sets up the beginning of each life cycle and how it all plays out over the years.
Think of the Lagna in Vedic astrology as more like a map or a foundation of your entire life. The first house in the horoscope takes on the persona of what ever constellation is at the beginning. The rising sign controls the major aspects of life .
After the rising sign, the rest of your chart is based on where the planets reside and conditions such as exaltation or debilitation and primary strengths or weaknesses. Stay tuned for more information!
